For many people with varying eye problems, the idea that you can correct your vision is more than a notion; it’s a lifelong dream.

More than ever, we are over-using our eyes. We stare at the small write-ups and images on computer screens, televisions, and cell phones. This leads to eye lethargy and an increase in age-related eye problems.

Blurry Vision

Blurry vision is likely due to dry eyes. When your eyes are dry it causes inflammation in the cells of the eye, due to increased tear film evaporation and/or decreased tear production.

This is a very common condition in females, those over the age of 40, people who spend long periods in air-conditioned or heated environments, and some thought it to be due to hormonal changes as well as

  • increasing fluid intake
  • Decreasing exposure to an air-conditioned environment. This is a quick measure to relieve dry eye.
  • If you wear contact lenses, you can also give your eyes a break by not using them when you don’t really need them.
  • Artificial tears that are free from preservatives will also help restore lubrication to the eye.
  • Avoid spending long hours in front of your computer and take a break every 20 minutes.
  • Computer users should also look away from their screens from time to time.

Constant blurry vision could also be a sign of cataracts, in which case you should see an ophthalmologist.

Itchy eyes can be accompanied by redness and tearing as well as a runny or congested nose and sneezing.

Fix itchy eyes as a result of an allergy:

  • Determine what is causing the possible irritation
  • Remove or reduce the allergen.
  • Spring is also the time when allergies increase, so, be prepared and take oral anti-histamines before symptoms start to appear if you regularly suffer from hay fever.
  • Using lubricating eye drops can be soothing and also assist in reducing the amount of allergen. The eye drops should be free from preservatives.
  • Over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops can also be used for a limited period of time.
  • Don’t use eye drops that “whiten the eye“ as this is not fixing the problem, but hiding it.

Red Eyes Problems

There are many possible causes of red eyes, as you could be tired or even have a growth on the eye.

Pterygium is a noncancerous growth of tissue that usually grows from the inner part of the eye. The growth often develops in people who live in a warm climate.

Fix for Pterygium:

  • using lubricating eye drops as already stated will help reduce redness and irritation,
  • However, if the growth starts to affect your vision, it is best to see a specialist.

Subconjunctival hemorrhage

A subconjunctival hemorrhage is a sudden painless, redness in the white of the eye that often occurs without you noticing it. A subconjunctival hemorrhage is due to a tiny blood vessel bursting, and this can occur as a result of an episode of coughing or vomiting.

Fix for subconjunctival hemorrhage:

  • This usually requires no treatment and resolves spontaneously within 2-3 weeks. The blood will slowly clear spontaneously.
  • Using eye drops that whiten the eye is not important. It will only delay the healing process
  • If these hemorrhages occur more frequently and do not resolve please see a specialist to determine the cause, and proffer a better treatment approach.

Conjunctivitis (also known as pink eye): This is a swelling or redness of the conjunctiva of the eye. It can be allergic, viral or bacterial and is highly contagious.

Fix for conjunctivitis:

  • You need to know if it’s viral or bacterial, which makes it tricky. But if it’s the latter, you’ll need antibiotic eye drops or ointment.

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids that can cause dandruff-like scales on the eyelashes. It is very common in the elderly.

Fix for blepharitis:

  • Good eyelid hygiene and a regular cleaning routine
  • Face washing with warm water or, using warm compresses to cover the eyelids
  • Doing an eyelid scrub with some baby shampoo.
  • If doing the above does not improve the symptoms, prescription antibiotics may be required.

Hordeolum (more commonly known as a stye), is when the eyelid looks out of shape with a painful red swelling at the eyelid margin. This occurs mainly due to an infection in one of the glands of the eyelid.

Fix for hordeolum/styes:

  • Warm soaks and compresses will speed up the eruption of the stye’s point and support in drainage.
  • Removing the eyelash that has turned in would also aid in speeding up the healing process.
  • you may still need antibiotic eye drops in the event that more styes form or don’t resolve
  • Be cautious when doing this yourself.

Wearing contact lenses can cause red eyes. Contact lenses have a drying effect on the eye, but preservative free lubricating eye drops can offer some relief (but not a solution). If the problem persists or both eyes are suddenly or persistently red, consult your optometrist.

 Floating Objects Eye Problems

Muscae volitantes  (floaters or fluttering flies) occur when the vitreous, which is the jelly at the back of the eye, starts to age and separates, causing strand like pieces to become visible in the line of sight.

This process is normal and becomes more visible when one looks at a plain white wall and sees “worm“ like objects floating against the background.

Fix for muscae volitantes:

  • If symptoms like light flashes in your vision occur, see your optometrist as soon as possible.

Give Your Eyes Some Rest

Getting enough sleep is crucial for eye health, as sleep allows your eyes to fully rest, repair, and recover. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, and experts recommend you aim for 8 hours of sound sleep a night.

Furthermore, give your eyes a break every now and then. Give it a rest once an hour during your workday. Experts will advise that you rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer.

If your eyes feel very tired, you can lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids.
